XV A salutation to the same man [Gregory of Tours] Highest father of the fatherland, lofty and universal summit, strong glory of your race, pinnacle of Tours, light coming auspiciously from the fields of the Arverni [Auvergne], you who, illuminating the peoples, are scattered abroad as a beacon by your speech, hastening from those Alps, a mountain higher than they themselves, a man seated upon the plains who shelters the holy camp, lest the enemy do harm to those who are faithful within the sheepfold, you stand, the sole public tower upon the fields. Give a sweet leader to this region, dear Gregory, you whom the sacred chair of Martin keeps as its father; I commend myself, humble Fortunatus, to you as my patron; so may your life long endure in this world for God.
