Letter 5011: Ad eundem de itinere suo

11 To the same man, concerning his journey Continually and gladly I desire, holy Gregory, you who are to be embraced, to behold you with my eyes and to seek you out with little letters. Sweet it is for me to see you; but if the opportunity of being seen should be lacking, there will at least be hope, as I pray, of addressing words to my father. Lately, departing in haste from your sight, I tell that I went over glassy roads across the ice. But by the help of the cross, with Martin [Saint Martin of Tours] my patron at work, I arrived safe among the mothers [the nuns], bountiful father. They greet you reverently with manifold honor; but I, for my return, offer up vows for your well-being.

XI Ad eundem de itinere suo Iugiter opto libens, sacer amplectende Gregori, cernere vos oculis, quaerere litterulis. dulce videre mihi, at si desit copia cerni, spes erit oranti vel dare verba patri. nuper ab aspectu decedens concite vestro per glaciem vitreas me loquor isse vias. sed crucis auxilio, Martino operante patrono, perveni ad matres salvus, opime pater. quae vos multiplici veneranter honore salutant: ast ego pro reditu vota salutis ago.
