Letter 86: Procopius lists everything Hieronymus should have reported from Alexandria and the Nile.

You, my excellent friend, should have been the one to begin writing after you sailed away from us. You should have taught those who longed to know whether Poseidon had been kind to you and spread the sea smooth beneath your ship; whether things in Alexander's city went well; whether you sailed successfully up the broad Nile; whether the school is flourishing; whether money now comes to you in tens of thousands; and whether your house is full of Egyptian gifts. That is what you should have written. You should have fulfilled your promises, which included many letters and no forgetting of friends. Instead, you ignore even a man who writes to you, refusing to answer letters with letters. So now I have sent a second letter. If you keep silent, perhaps I will add a third, until some shame over what you are doing enters you and I have the good fortune of hearing your voice.

Ἱερωνύμωι Σὲ μέν, ὦ βέλτιστε, τὸν ἐξ ἡμῶν ἀπάραντα κατάρχειν ἔδει γραμμάτων καὶ διδάσκειν εἰδέναι ποθοῦντας εἴ σοι γέγονεν ὁ Ποσειδῶν εὐμενὴς καὶ τῇ νηὶ τὴν θάλατταν ὑπεστόρεσεν, εἰ τὰ κατὰ τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου γέγονεν εὐμενῆ, εἰ τὸν πολὺν Νεῖλον ἀνέπλευσας εὐτυχῶς, εἰ τὰ τῆς διατριβῆς εὐθαλῆ, καί σοι λοιπὸν ἐν μυριάσι τὸ νόμισμα, καὶ τὸν οἶκον ἔχεις Αἰγυπτίοις πλήθοντα δώροις. ταῦτα γράφειν ἐχρῆν καὶ τὰς ὑποσχέσεις πληροῦν, ἐν αἷς πολλαὶ μὲν ἐπιστολαί, λήθη δὲ τῶν φίλων οὐκ ἦν. σὺ δὲ καὶ ἐπιστέλλοντα παρορᾷς, οὐκ ἐθέλων ἀμείβεσθαι γράμμασι. τοιγαροῦν ἤδη καὶ δευτέραν ἐπέστειλα, κἂν ἔτι σιγήσῃς τάχα καὶ τρίτην προσθήσομεν, ἕως σέ τις ἐπεισέλθῃ τῶν δρωμένων αἰδώς, καὶ τὴν σὴν φωνὴν εὐτυχήσωμεν.
