Letter 9: Procopius jokes that Hieronymus can smell celebration from Elusa and thanks him for gifts.

I thought your sister's wedding had escaped notice, not only from you, whom I imagined still sitting by the Nile, but even from everyone living near the house. Yet it seems that nothing connected with celebration can escape you. As soon as anything is done, the scent of what is being performed strikes you from far away. Perhaps you even surpass Homer's Zeus, loving the libation and the savor of fat winding upward in the smoke. The Nile has made you like this, along with the blessed people who live beside it. After them, now that you live at Elusa, you have a sharper sense whenever smoke rises from the earth. I very nearly treated your servant badly because he did not let you write a longer letter. But when he brought gifts from you, the sight changed me, and somehow dissolved my anger. Before long I will repay you for these gifts. Either you already have a little daughter, or you soon will.
