Letter 36: Rufinus is a fountain of love, and gentleness gives birth to wisdom.

Whoever remembers Your Holiness remembers virtue; and whoever remembers virtue remembers God, who made you a fountain of love, flowing generously and equally for everyone. We too drank deeply from it not long ago and were greatly refreshed by all that you have. When a storm overtook us, we found a harbor of salvation. What shall I repay to the Lord, who has given us all these good things through your kindness? I will proclaim your name to my brothers, and in the midst of the church I will praise you. I will not stop blessing you with spiritual songs all the days of my life. May I see you in the age to come set over five cities and over ten, and may we too be found in them again, taught and nourished by you. I am persuaded that your gentleness has become the cause of great knowledge for you, since no virtue gives birth to wisdom as gentleness does. Moses too was praised because he was gentler than all people. I ask to become a disciple of the gentle one and to serve him.
