Letter 10008: Ad eosdem in laude

VIII To the same persons, in praise. If it were granted me to unfold the praises of kings, it would not suffice me to speak by night and by day. How this people hangs upon the love of its lords, and holds its eyes fixed upon your faces! You, who remain a mirror and a light and a sweetness, are likewise to these their dear ornament, their honor. A peaceful and forgiving reign is a surpassing gift, and in your standing there is a holy summit in the world. Here kinship and fatherland and protection shine forth, here is dignity and rank, here is the work of piety. Here is tranquil rest, here is a joyous hope for the faithful, and, after God, in you they hold the gifts of salvation. Here I join my prayers and my joys with the people, which may holy Christ, increasing them, cause to grow. May the care of God grant to keep you long in your seat, and to hold your kingdoms long by heavenly gift. May you still acquire new lands or rule those you possess, and may you devoutly cherish these riches as partners in them, so that you, who flourish from son and offspring, may behold the ripe harvest, O mother shining in honor; and so that from your child and from grandchildren widely begotten another illustrious progeny may be granted to a grandmother. From Childebert [the king], in sweetness, in flower, in well-being, may you have fruit, O mother, your people beholding their own prayers. From daughter and daughter-in-law may the Creator heap up gifts for you, and with holy merit may you stand pleasing to devout God. Here may I earn, returning, to give words of greeting, rejoicing together with my pious lords, I myself a little one: may the affairs of the kings be prosperous, may the joys of the peoples increase; may the realm exult, may this honor stand long.
