Letter 93: Martyrius confidently expects Apollonius to help if Procopius writes.

The most reverent Martyrius is rich in virtue but poor in fortune. He needs your weight on his side, and he says he has very great experience of it from earlier occasions. He easily persuaded me, because I know that you extend your hand to everyone who needs to be set upright and calls for help. He has from me only resources that put no strength into him and still leave him to die. So he looks to you, thinking this will be the release from his troubles. Take hold of the matter eagerly, then, and give him a kindly eye: for your own sake, for mine, and for the sake of the man now in need. He said with confidence that if you received a letter from me, there is nothing you would not easily do. When I smiled and asked how he knew, he was ready to guarantee the future. Fulfill his hopes, then, so that when need calls again he does not guarantee the future by saying I can accomplish nothing with you.

Ἀπολλωνίωι Ὁ εὐλαβέστατος Μαρτύριος, πλουτῶν μὲν ἀρετῇ, τῇ δὲ τύχῃ πενόμενος, δεῖται τῆς ὑμετέρας ῥοπῆς, πλείστην ἔχων, ὥς φησιν, ἐκ τῶν φθασάντων τὴν πεῖραν, καί με ῥᾳδίως ἔπειθεν, ἐπιστάμενον ὡς πᾶσι χεῖρα προτείνεις τοῖς ὀρθοῦσθαι δεομένοις καὶ πρὸς ἐπικουρίαν καλοῦσι· τοσαῦτα γὰρ ἔχων παρ' ἡμῖν ὅσα μήτ' ἰσχὺν ἐντίθησι καὶ ἀποθνῄσκειν ἐᾷ, εἰς ὑμᾶς ὁρᾷ, λύσιν εἶναι κακῶν τὸ τοιοῦτον ἡγούμενος. ἀλλ' ἀντέχου προθύμως, ὄμμα διδοὺς εὐμενὲς καὶ διὰ σαυτὸν καὶ δι' ἐμὲ καὶ διὰ τὸν ἐν χρείᾳ καθεστηκότα. καὶ γὰρ θαρρῶν ἔλεγεν ὡς ἐὰν δέξῃ γράμματα παρ' ἐμοῦ, οὐδὲν ὅ τι μὴ ῥᾳδίως ποιήσεις. ἐμοῦ δὲ μειδιῶντος καὶ ὁπόθεν οἶδεν ἀνερομένου, καὶ κατεγγυᾶσθαι τὸ μέλλον ἕτοιμος ἦν. οὐκοῦν πλήρωσον αὐτῷ τὰς ἐλπίδας, ἵνα μὴ χρείας αὖθις καλούσης κατεγγυᾶται τὸ μέλλον ὡς οὐδὲν ἀνύσαιμι παρ' ὑμῖν.
