Letter 876

To Tryphon the Deacon. Surely the man who, at the very time of the war against fornication, indulges in gluttony and drunkenness, and who, with his many seasonings, mixes in garum [fermented fish sauce] and pepper, most assuredly stirs up for himself madness and a war without truce.

(1) Ἦ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τοῦ πορνικοῦ πολέμου ἀδηφαγία χρώμενος, καὶ οἰνοφλυγίᾳ, καὶ ταῖς πολλαῖς προαρτύσεσι συμπλέκων τὸ γάρον, καὶ τὸ πέπερι, πάντως ὅτι μανίαν ἑαυτῷ ἐπεγείρει, καὶ πόλεμον ἄσπονδον.
