To the same man. (362/63) You know, I suppose, Eustochius, the man from Palestine, the one full of laws and supporting the laws by the force of his eloquence, who has proved himself of great worth to Apellion, and of still greater worth to Macedonius the old man, having hastened on his behalf to the Great City [Constantinople], and toiling alongside him everywhere. Many and not trifling are the labors he has undertaken on our behalf as well, and if he should ask anything, I must at once render service or else seem to be a bad man. Now then, he wishes that Gerontius escape the council, if any way should appear; and he says that he himself [Gerontius] is in good vigor for the contest, and I am persuaded. Therefore, showing yourself well-disposed, make it so that I do not owe everything to the noble Eustochius.

Τῷ αὐτῷ. (362/63) Εὐστόχιον οἶσθά που τὸν ἐκ Παλαιστίνης τὸν νόμων τε πλήρη καὶ τῇ τῶν λόγων ῥώμῃ βοηθοῦντα τοῖς νόμοις, ὃς πολλοῦ μὲν ἄξιος Ἀπελλίωνι γεγένηται, πλείονος δὲ Μακεδο- νίῳ τῷ γέροντι, δραμὼν μὲν ὑπὲρ τοῦδε πρὸς τὴν Μεγάλην πόλιν, πανταχοῦ δὲ ἐκείνῳ συμπονῶν. πεπόνηται δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν πολλά τε καὶ οὐ σμικρά, κἂν κελεύσῃ τι, δεῖ με εὐθὺς ὑπουργεῖν ἢ κακὸν εἶναι δοκεῖν. νῦν τοίνυν βούλε- ται Γερόντιον τὴν βουλὴν διαφυγεῖν, εἴ τι φαίνοιτο φησὶ δὲ αὐτὸν ἐρρῶσθαι πρὸς τὸν ἀγῶνα, καὶ ἐγὼ πείθομαι. σαυτὸν οὖν παρασχὼν εὔνουν ποίησόν με μὴ πάντα ὁφεί- λειν Εὐστοχίῳ τῷ καλῷ.
