Letter 1577: Do not be shaken by the fact that many who love virtue suffer countless terrible things in this world.

To Boethos the Monk I have sent the most excellent Eutonius to guide you with wise counsels. Show reverence, therefore: first toward what is fitting, second toward yourselves, third toward me, who advise in matters where I might command, and fourth toward the man who has consented to endure so great a labor for the sake of your peace. And, banishing all enmity, gladly embrace friendship toward one another.

Ἔπεμψα τὸν πανάριστον Εὐτόνιον, λόγιων συμβου- ληρίων ὑμῖν καθηγησόμενον. Αἰδέσθητε τοίνυν πρῶτον μὲν τὸ πρέπον, δεύτερον δὲ ἑαυτούς, τρίτον ἐμέ, τὸν ἐν οἷς ἔξεστιν ἐπιτάττειν, συμβουλεύοντα· τέ- ταρτον, τὸν καταδεξάμενον τοσοῦτον ὑπομεῖναι διὰ τὴν ὑμετέραν εἰρήνην κάματον. Καὶ πᾶσαν ἀπ- ἐχθειαν ἐξορίσαντες, ἄσμενοι τὴν πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς φιλίαν ἀσπάσασθε.
