Since the more severely to be punished are those crimes which are brought against the innocent, and most of all against the consecrated orders, the more culpable are all of you who sat in judgment in the case of John the deacon. Take heed, therefore, that no penalty arising from your sentence should chastise Hilarus, the accuser of that same man. Nor should you believe this to be a suitable excuse for yourselves, namely that, when you were as it were willing to judge, our brother and fellow bishop Pascasius alone is said to have caused delay. [...] For if a zeal for rectitude had been vigorous in you, one man could more easily have been persuaded by many in a reasonable manner than many could have been put off by one without cause.
