Just as the light of a lamp is diffused through all the neighboring places which it illuminates, so the uprightness of any person's good deeds is recognized not only in the place where he dwells, but throughout the various provinces, by report speaking of it, so that, since there can be no direct knowledge of one's presence, the running-about of opinion may accomplish what the truth of the matter could have shown through one's presence. For we have learned that the various judges who are sent to administer the African Province cherish your Glory with the utmost intimacy. This would not come about unless the sincerity of his mind were apparent to those same judges, so that they might order the administration they had obtained through the sharing of your counsel. And indeed we render the greatest thanks to God, since we recognize that the provinces have as their own such inhabitants as are strong in inborn nobility, and cleave to powerful men, and stand by their fellow provincials for their relief, when the opportunity of the times is obtained. Therefore, discharging the affection of fatherly love, we commend to your Glory the bearer of this present letter, whom we have directed there to set in order the affairs of the poor, that you may grant to him in whatever shall be necessary, with justice preserved. And we pray the Lord, that He may guard your life in all good [...], and that He may dispose your acts by the gift of His mercy.
