That in a certain oratory of the honorable lady Magetia the divine offices may be celebrated in the name of the dead, but with public assembly and procession being suspended [...]. Pope Gelasius to John, bishop of Sora. It is indeed certain, and established by our own injunctions, that no one in a church or in an oratory which is not read to have been dedicated by the permission of our see should suppose that a public procession is to be expended there, lest the founders, by stealthy underhand dealings, should leap forth against the statutes of the rules. But because Magetia, an honorable lady, has by the offering of a petition suggested to us that she has buried the little bodies of her own people on her own estates: dearest brother, out of regard for humanity, inasmuch as the earlier statutes are not defiled by funerals and tombs, you are to know that the ministrations are to be furnished, for the sake of the solemnity, only in the places comprised in the petition, so that solely in the name of the dead the divine offices may be celebrated, with public assembly and procession being suspended.
