Letter 62: The kingdom needs purified vision, not mere reasoning.

The kingdom of heaven does not need the soul's reasoning power, but its power of vision. Reasoning is found even in defiled souls; vision is found only in pure ones. So whenever occasions arise, write to us and pray that we may not be untrained in knowledge. Despise mere reasoning, because it is of no use for our road. Our Lord said, "Come, you blessed of my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you." You see that in none of these things did reasoning point the way. A word is the messenger of thoughts, but the kingdom of heaven stands not in word but in power. Power means the purity of soul that comes through love, which you yourself have possessed through the Lord from the beginning, and through your letters you have given us spiritual offspring. You wrote such things to us as the Lord's love suggested to you. Still, I wonder whether things are really so with us. Take care that you are not found looking for grapes from thorns or figs from thorn-burrs, or calling someone deprived of light a lamp. Pray for us, then, that the Lord may make us what you think us to be. We are not yet such people.
