Letter 33: Greed and lawsuits keep the soul from wisdom; love Christ, practice mercy, and make the tent a holy lodging.

You are not free to write letters for people caught up in lawsuits. You have chosen a trade that keeps you very far from the kingdom of heaven. Night and day you quarrel and stir up relentless wars against one another over filthy profits and other business, and you repeat that ridiculous proverb: without bronze and fear, Phoebus gives no oracle. So you are merciful toward people who give, but toward those who do not give, or who ask from you, you seem merciless. You have come to this: you look at the hands of everyone who arrives carrying something under his arm, but no one looks at your hands. May greed perish from human beings, and may this wicked craft never rule over any Christian. If someone desires the knowledge of our Savior, he loves good wisdom. The person who loves wisdom must be gentle, self-controlled, innocent, free from anger, merciful, and constant in prayer. Let him drive resentment away from himself, but let him risk his whole soul for the word of right faith and for the thoughts that belong to it. Let me say this to you according to the proverb: give an opening to a wise person, and he will become wiser; instruct a righteous person, and he will grow in understanding. I know that you greatly love Christ and that nothing in your eyes is more precious than the knowledge of him. Become like your fellow citizen, who shares your name, and sit outside your tent, treating this world as a shadow spread out before you. Feed the calf through your virtues, so that it may be ready for hospitality. You have Sarah as a zealous helper; I know that she worships God with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. May the Lord grant that the noon of your virtue shine brightly, and that your tent become a lodging place for the holy angels and for our Savior Christ.
