I have not yet praised the wine, because I have not yet drunk it. I expect I will praise it once I have, since you would not have sent anything poor. I am persuaded it comes from your own vines; and when I remember what I said when I asked you to send it, I will be no different now. As for the man you said had behaved badly toward you, though you had fought many battles on his behalf, know that he suffered misfortune on the road and was badly wounded in body. He said nothing about the hostility that arose between you. He had not even heard the long speeches about the official dress and the boundaries you set for us, which you know. I think that in other conversations he would have wished to say something about these matters. Perhaps he will accuse the gods; but time will speak for you even in your absence, since it has seen nothing bad in you, great or small, in any respect.
