To Zosimus. Against the Macedonians, that is, the Pneumatomachi [the "Spirit-fighters," followers of Macedonius who denied the divinity of the Holy Spirit]. The divine and worshipped Spirit came down upon the holy disciples on the tenth day after the Ascension and the fiftieth day after the Resurrection, just as the Lord had promised, having pledged at the time of his ascent into the heavens that he would do this "not many days hence" [Acts 1:5]. And the inspired Luke wrote that it was fulfilled—which thing the impious Montanus [second-century heresiarch who claimed the Paraclete had come to him] falsely declared had not yet come to pass even after many later years, both slandering the Lord as not speaking the truth, and the disciples as having been cheated of the promise, and certain others as having unjustly received the announcement in their place—if indeed, when some had contended in the midst of dangers, others enjoyed the prizes. But by what spirit did they work the miracles, or instruct the nations in true religion?
