Hormisdas to Anastasius Augustus, by [the hand of] Severianus. Your Clemency rightly trusts, as you indicated to me by the glorious words you sent, that it especially profits your commonwealth if the cause of the orthodox faith is set before all other affairs. For this, venerable Emperor, is the more wholesome care arising from the governance you have undertaken as ruler: that by good works one should win for oneself the favor of him who both bestows and governs the whole empire. Accordingly it befits me also to make supplication to our Lord Jesus Christ, that he who willed your Piety to take thought for the concord of his Church may deign to grant fulfillment in this matter as well, so that throughout your times the whole world, endowed with the orthodox faith, may rejoice. But concerning those things which you commanded to be done for the synodal assembly, I have given instruction that what ought to be done be made known to your Glory through my brothers and fellow bishops, who will follow shortly after; and by their representation, if divine favor attends my prayers, you will be able to learn everything more fully.
