Letter 9047: **From:** Gregory I, Bishop of Rome

To the subdeacon Sabinus. [Summary:] Let him investigate the complaints of the clergy of Regium against their bishop, together with five bishops, so that, having been made more certain by their report, he himself may decide the matter at Rome. Gregory to Sabinus, subdeacon. The clergy of the Church of Regium, in a petition presented to us, have complained of many things against our most reverend brother Bonifacius, their bishop, asking that they ought to have permission to come to us, so that the cases themselves might be examined here in detail. But since for the present we have not foreseen that our aforesaid brother should be brought here in this manner, it has seemed good to us to appoint that the same case be heard there. And therefore, with the most holy Gospels placed in the midst, let your experience, together with our most reverend brothers and fellow bishops Paulinus, Proculus, Palumbus, and Venerius, as well as Martianus, without respect for any person's standing, investigate both the complaint of the clergy which they have against their bishop, as we have said, and likewise, if perchance he has any complaint against them, with all equity and care. And whatever you shall learn in truth, signify it to us in detail and diligently together with our aforesaid brothers, so that, having been rendered more certain by your report, we may decide what ought to be done.
