If this is so, we are grieved, because you offer a manifest beginning of pride concerning yourself. How blameworthy this is, especially in a priest, the words of divine admonition cry out. Therefore we exhort you that, the swelling of your mind being laid aside, you do not cease to show yourself humble toward your ordainer, the aforesaid brother and our fellow bishop, and to obey him, so that both God may rejoice in the concord of your Fraternity, and others may take from you an example of goodness. For if it should happen, which we do not believe, that you persist in pride, know that we will impose strict and canonical correction of discipline upon you, in vengeance for your contumacy. You will therefore do well to offer yourself willingly, by a salutary consideration, to be such as you would be compelled to be when canonical coercion demanded it. For it will not be permitted to you, after our admonition, again to exist disobedient to your superiors, contrary to custom, according to the choice of your own will, nor are you to suppose that we will, for so great a thing, overlook or defer the ecclesiastical vindication of indiscipline. But because we do not wish to sadden your Fraternity, and do not wish the petition of our sons to be frustrated with us in the least, we grant the use of the pallium, until we learn something more precisely, in the solemn litanies, that is, on the birthday of blessed John the Baptist, of blessed Peter the apostle, and of blessed Apollinaris the martyr, and at the celebration of your ordination. But in the sacristy, according to the former custom, when the sons of the Church have been received and dismissed, your Fraternity should put on the pallium, and so proceed to the solemnities of the masses, and arrogate to yourself nothing further by daring rash presumption, lest, while something is seized upon in a disorderly way in outward attire, even those things which might have been permitted in an orderly way should be lost.
