It is established that you have paid into the accounts of the church, from the rendering of the estate [...]vdas, which you hold under the title of a lease, from the produce of the year of the consuls Asterius and Praesidius, men of clarissimus rank [most distinguished], of the third indiction, thirty solidi of gold. I have noted this on the fifth day before the Kalends of August, in the consulship of Flavius Tirus, a man of clarissimus rank. [Editorial notes:] The word "priestly" [sacerdotalis]: in G* and a* these proceedings are closed here. The rest is supplied from the source of Vir[...]. From which it is clear that more was granted to Misenus than he was asking, since together with ecclesiastical communion the priestly dignity was also restored to him; and indeed in each case it had not so much been taken from him as suspended. We see that an addition must be made "to you" [in te dictum]: this we restore from the notes of Fronto. This passage is to be noted: for it is the first in which we recall that the Roman prelate is called the vicar of Christ. The custom of naming him the vicar of Peter long prevailed. He himself, above at no. 5, "under the sight of blessed Peter the apostle and of his vicar," indicating Gelasius by that word [voce], testifies that he is acting. What, however, among the Latins was the [sense] of the word "vicar," Suidas notes thus: "successor to the Roman [bishops]," "vicarius" among the Romans is the same as "successor." And this indeed may be confirmed from these words of Cyprian to [...]hanus, epistle 1, no. 5: "For the glorious honor of our predecessors, the blessed martyrs Cornelius and Lucius, must be preserved; and as we honor their memory, much more ought you, dearest brother, to honor and preserve it by your seriousness and authority, you who have become their vicar and successor." [The readings] published by Mai are corrected on good faith from the archetype, with which also the chronicle prefixed to the most recent little book of Misenus agrees. AD 495: thirty solidi of gold. I noted this on the fifth day before the Kalends of August, when Flavius Tirus, a man of clarissimus rank, was consul.
